Same product, four marketplaces: what each one leaves you
Enter one product once and see Etsy, eBay, Amazon and TikTok Shop side by side. The percentages are close; the bases are not — and the base is where the money goes.
| Marketplace | Fees | You keep | Margin |
|---|
Defaults use published rates checked November 2026: Etsy US$0.20 listing + 6.5% transaction + 3% + US$0.25 processing; eBay a 13.6% final value fee + US$0.30 per order; Amazon a 15% referral fee + the FBA fee you enter (0 for FBM, plus US$0.99 only on the Individual plan — set the referral box to your real category); TikTok Shop US a 6% referral fee on (buyer payment + platform discount − tax). Every figure varies by category, country and account — replace the defaults with what your own statements show.
Why the base, not the percentage, decides it
- Etsy charges its 6.5% transaction fee on the item price and what the buyer paid for shipping. A "free shipping included" price is fee-bearing.
- eBay charges its final value fee on the total the buyer pays, shipping usually included, plus a fixed amount per order that bites hardest on cheap items.
- Amazon takes its referral fee on the total sales price and adds the FBA fulfilment fee, which does not shrink when the price does.
- TikTok Shop US charges 6% on buyer payment plus any platform-funded discount, minus tax — so a discount TikTok pays for does not lower your fee, and the creator commission you set usually costs more than the platform fee.
Knowing the fee is step one; knowing which of your products is quietly losing money is the part that changes the month. Or run one export free, no signup.
Or take all three Canadian workbooks together: the bundle is US$29.
Etsy, Amazon, Walmart and TikTok change their fee tables without announcing it, and the Canadian tax deadlines move. I check and send one short email when something real changes. No sequence, no selling you something every Tuesday.
