The three fee lines that break a seller's break-even

Most people price a product by taking the marketplace percentage off the top and calling what is left profit. Three lines get left out of that calculation, and each one is enough to turn a comfortable margin into a loss. Here they are with the arithmetic on a real order.

1. The Regulatory Operating fee, 0.50% of item price plus shipping

Etsy charges this to sellers in certain countries and the rate differs by country. For Canada it is 0.50%, charged on the item price plus shipping and gift wrap, excluding tax. Its published rate table lists Canada at 0.50%, the United Kingdom at 0.48%, France at 1.14%, Italy at 0.80%, Spain at 0.88% and Türkiye at 1.67%.

On a CA$36 order that is about 18 cents. That sounds like nothing, and it is exactly why it survives in a listing that was never priced for it: it is a permanent cut, it applies to every order, and almost no fee calculator applies it. Multiply it across a year of orders and it is a real number.

2. Payment processing is not one rate — international orders cost a third more

Etsy Payments processing depends on where the seller's bank account is, not where the shop is registered. For a Canadian bank account the published rates are 3% + CA$0.25 on domestic orders and orders from the United States, and 4% + CA$0.25 on orders from anywhere else. A United States bank account pays 3% + US$0.25 on all orders.

Same product, same price, sold to a buyer in Germany instead of Ohio: the processing line is a third higher, and the seller usually finds out by comparing two months of payouts.

3. Shipping the buyer pays sits inside the fee base

On Etsy the 6.5% transaction fee applies to the item price and the shipping you charge. On TikTok Shop the published United States base is even stranger: the rate multiplies the customer payment plus the platform discount, minus tax — so a discount TikTok funds does not reduce the fee you pay. In the United Kingdom the base is net sales, buyer-paid shipping and platform discount, less refunds.

Charging CA$6 for postage does not protect CA$6. It adds CA$6 to the amount the percentage is taken from, and if the label costs you CA$8.20 you absorb the difference and pay fees on it.

What it looks like on one Etsy order

A CA$24.99 item with CA$4.99 shipping the buyer pays, so the buyer is charged CA$29.98. Canadian seller, Canadian or US buyer, no Offsite Ads on this order, listing fee billed in USD at $0.20.

LineAmount
Buyer paysCA$29.98
Listing fee-CA$0.28
Transaction fee, 6.5% of item plus shipping-CA$1.95
Payment processing, 3% + CA$0.25-CA$1.15
Regulatory Operating fee, 0.50%-CA$0.15
Total marketplace fees-CA$3.53

Fees are 11.8% of what the buyer paid. If the provider base cost is CA$11.50 with CA$4.75 of shipping, the sale leaves CA$10.20 before tax, and the same order sold to a buyer outside Canada and the US leaves CA$9.90 because processing moves from 3% to 4%. Add a sale that came through Offsite Ads, at 15%, and the fee total climbs to CA$8.03 with CA$5.70 left — a 19% margin on an order the naive calculation called roughly 35%.

Other marketplaces, briefly

WhereWhat catches people
Walmart MarketplaceReferral fees run 5–20% by category and several categories are tiered rather than flat: apparel is 5% up to $15, 10% to $20 and 15% above, while Electronics Accessories is 15% on the first $100 and 8% above. The fee applies to the total sales price, shipping included.
TikTok Shop6% referral on most United States categories, 5% on some jewellery and pre-owned, 9% including VAT in the United Kingdom. Creator commission is set by the seller and can run to 80% — the common figure is around 13% — and stacks on top of the referral fee.
Resale platformsVinted and Depop charge the seller nothing and bill the buyer instead, which changes the checkout price your listing competes at rather than your take. Mercari charges 10% on the item and buyer-paid shipping. Poshmark is $2.95 flat below $15 and 20% at $15 and above.

How to price around all of this

  1. Build the fee stack into the price, not into the hope. Compute the fee on the total the buyer pays, including the shipping you charge.
  2. Find the break-even for each product, then look at where you are priced. The number that matters is not the margin on a good month; it is the price below which the product loses money on every single sale.
  3. Check your own payouts for one month rather than trusting a published rate. Category assignment, tier, and the country of the buyer all move the percentage.
  4. Treat free shipping as a price cut plus a fee increase. You lose the shipping revenue and you still pay fees on the order total.
